Go Inside West London's Secret Second World War Bunker

This is a sponsored article on behalf of Battle of Britain Bunker.

Did you know that an underground room in west London was used to help the RAF secure victory during the Battle of Britain — and that you can take a guided tour of that same secret subterranean space today?

As the Battle of Britain — the first conflict in history fought solely in the air — raged between the RAF and Nazi Germany's Luftwaffe in our skies in 1940, the Bunker at former RAF Uxbridge coordinated the air defence of London and the whole of south-east England, helping to prevent a German invasion and shaping history.

For a full deep dive (and literal descent) into the remarkable story behind this underground space, visit the Battle of Britain Bunker. Book a one-hour guided tour and take the 76 steps into the original 1940s space, 60ft below the ground, to learn about what went on here during the Second World War.

Alongside the Bunker itself, a visitor centre and exhibition details the role it played in some of the most important chapters of the conflict including the evacuation at Dunkirk, the ill-fated Dieppe Raid and the early stages of D-Day.

In the main exhibition, listen to first-hand accounts from people who worked in the Bunker, and see original artefacts including aircraft wreckage and telecommunications equipment. Visiting with children? They can also join in by dressing up like a pilot, getting crafty in the Mess Hall and having a go at plotting on the interactive map.

Take a look at what to expect on your visit:

If you're unable to tackle those 76 steps, or nervous about going underground, a virtual Bunker tour is available instead, featuring a recorded guided tour of the original plotting room, as well as a 360-degree touch screen experience.

All that history making you hungry? Head to Daisy’s in the Park, an onsite café which serves up a range of lunch options alongside drinks and homemade cakes. Don't forget to end your day out at the gift shop, with aviation-themed gifts and books for all ages.

So, whether you were top of the class at school or a back-row rebel, this immersive experience recognising the extraordinary work of those who defended the country is a history lesson you won’t want to bunk off.

Tickets to the Battle of Britain Bunker can be booked online via the website or over the phone on 01895 238154. The Battle of Britain Bunker offers free onsite parking, a gift shop and café as well as a large meeting room and auditorium which can be hired out for private use.
