The tip of the Shard will light up with an array of festive animations this Christmas, including one of a giant snowman in a red scarf and hat.

Animated images developed in partnership with the London School of Mosaic, and put together by lighting designer Woodroffe Bassett Design, will adorn the top 20 storeys of London's tallest building from 28 November 2023 — between 5.30pm and midnight every day until New Year's Eve. They'll include:

  • A huge snowman that melts away (well THAT brings back triggering Raymond Briggs-esque memories)
  • A candle flickering against a blue backdrop
  • A green and gold pattern, inspired by Eduardo Paolozzi's Christmas Brooch (Paolozzi, of Tottenham Court Road mosaic fame, of course).

In all, the animations create a looping 30-minute light show, which will be visible from 40 miles away.

Certainly sounds like one of the most playful uses of the Shard's lights so far, although in previous Christmasses, it has also turned itself into a giant Christmas tree.
