Discover The Science Of Breaking Bad

What would make crystal meth turn blue? Can you simply “wind-up” a makeshift car battery to get it started? Would a thermite reaction truly burn through a lock to get you out of (or into) trouble?

Breaking Bad fans: it’s time for a science lesson.

On 16 April, author, presenter and Breaking Bad fan Claudia Hammond chairs a panel discussion on The Science of Breaking Bad at The Royal Institution. Featuring chemist Dave Smith, psychologist Julian Boon and screenwriter Kate Garside, the group will get into the nitty gritty of the science encountered on the show, as well as the challenge of representing science on screen.

Breaking Bad was a hugely popular show with science at its core — its protagonist a super-scientist who had to grapple with morality, power and chemical experiments on a daily basis. Fans who are already clenching their fists with excitement should move fast, we’re sure tickets to this one will go up quicker than mercury fulminate.

Oh, and no doubt spoilers will abound, so don’t come crying to us when you find out that everyone dies at the end*.

*Just kidding.

Claudia Hammond presents: 'The Science of Breaking Bad' is at The Royal Institution on 16 April 2015, 7-8.30pm. Tickets cost £12/£8 and can be booked online here.
