Chance To See The The Off-Limits Bits Of Tower Bridge

The annual Tower Bridge Engineering Tours begin again in December, with tickets on sale now.

Led by Tower Bridge guides and engineers, the two-hour tours are split into two parts. In the first part, visitors will see the Tower Bridge Exhibition, tread the boards of the 42m high walkways above the Thames and visit the bridge’s engine rooms, which house the equipment used to power the bridge lifts until the 1970s.

The second part of the tour is where the real nitty gritty geekery comes in. Led by a Senior Technical Officer, visitors can enter the usually-off-limits Bridge Control Room and the Bascule Chambers below river level.  The tour also includes the Machinery Room, which houses the hydraulics that power the lifting of the bridge. Find out how the bridge works today and ask the experts any questions you may have.

Each tour is limited to 12 places, making them quite exclusive and going someway to justifying the £50 ticket price, which also includes a souvenir guidebook. Over 12s only.

The tours are available throughout the year when booked in advance for a minimum party of 12 people, but this is a unusual chance for individuals and smaller groups to take a peek behind the scenes.

Tours start on Saturday 15 November and run every weekend until March (except February). Tickets are £50 and must be prebooked, either by phoning  020 7407 9191 or emailing enquiries@towerbridge.org.uk
