60 Second Video: Phone Box Art Installation

The first red telephone kiosk, designed in 1924, is the site for four new sound works commissioned by arts organisation Measure.

The wooden red box, located at the Royal Academy of Art until 3 May, is the only one made of the prototype design that went on to become an icon. Visitors can enter the box, and dial a special number to hear the works.

Among the aural offerings is poet and writer Holly Pester's play on the gendered history of gossip, and sound and film artist Aura Satz's exploration of the electronic dial tone, while Lawrence Abu Hamdan continues his research into the role of the voice in law by revealing the act of listening as a form of witnessing.

We went down to the historic structure, installed under the entranceway to Burlington House, Piccadilly, to find out more.

If you’ve got an idea for a 60 second video we should make, tell us in the comments below or email hello@londonist.com
