Thought the zoo was for kids? Think again. For nine Fridays this summer, after it closes to day visitors, ZSL London Zoo will come back to life in the evening for their popular adults-only event, Zoo Lates.
As the sun sets you can visit the animal homes, including Tiger Territory, home to Sumatran tigers Jae Jae and Melati and their three young cubs. Stroll through Gorilla Kingdom, and come face to face with male silverback Kumbuka and his tribe, or visit pygmy hippos Thug and Nicola in their new pad. There will be special keeper talks and animal feeds throughout the evenings, giving you a chance to learn more about some of the 800 different species at the zoo.
Humans need feeding too, so head along to the street food festival in the central hub of the zoo and let the mouthwatering smells of international cuisines cooking draw you in.
After the animals have gone to bed, the zoo keeps going. The Bordeaux Wines Petit Chateau bar will be serving up a specially-chosen selection of wines for Zoo Lates. Grab a glass, then, shake your tail feathers at the Silent Dance Off, have a chuckle in The Comedy Den, or be entertained at The Lates Show.
Tickets for Zoo Lates cost £28 and must be bought in advance – and they usually sell fast. There is a discount for groups of 10 or more, or you can upgrade to an Ultimate Party Animal Ticket for £38, which includes fast track entrance, a drink on arrival and an animal hat or mask. For an extra twist, why not arrive at the zoo by Waterbus, direct from Camden Lock or Little Venice?
