What makes a person catch your eye? Is it a smile, a laugh, a look? Whatever it is that attracts us to each other, it is difficult to put into words or photos. Sometimes it is just a feeling as you pass each other on the street, at a local gig, or in your favourite coffee shop. But in as busy a city as London, it's all too easy to miss that fleeting chance to say hello.

New app happn knows that successful dating is about more than a set of tick-boxes and a good profile picture. Real life relationships happen in real time, but unfortunately we often don’t have the time (or the nerve) to talk to that person we have been gazing at over our book on the tube, or to call after that girl that stopped to ask you for directions and then left you lost for words.

So for the nervous, the hesitaters, the busy and the shy, happn is here to give real world connections a second chance at a first hello.

It’s a new approach to virtual dating. Working in real-time using hyper-locality and immediate proximity, users can find potential matches they have really crossed paths with. Pop to the gym, head into work, grab some lunch, head over to a friend’s house - then check out the profiles of people you have encountered whilst going about your day.

Like them? Remember them, even? Secretly ‘like’ them and if they return the gesture you’ll get a ‘crush’ notification and can start chatting. After all, you know you already have something in common.

To keep things safe, user locations remain private - only the place where you crossed paths is saved - and blocking is available for users who have second thoughts on a second meeting. Connecting with Facebook is mandatory, so profiles are reliable, but fear not as your data is not shared. Nobody wants their Mum wandering onto their dating timeline, and that’s something we think all Londoners can agree on.
