Tom Du Croz from LondonGigGuide selects his recommended small and medium-sized gigs around town this week.
Monday 7 April
Emily and the Woods, Old Blue Last, Shoreditch
This week’s shameless favourite. I loved this laid back track and Emily’s voice is beautifully tender. Currently on a national tour and they have a new EP out called Then We Collide. More info and book via Seetickets.
U.R.I., Underbelly, Hoxton
U.R.I. is the stage name of Uri Sade, a London-based singer/songwriter who was born in Israel. He currently studies at The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance having won a full scholarship. More details on the Underbelly website.
Tuesday 8 April
Jonny Cola and the A-Grades, Barfly, Camden Town
This track is from their last album, but they’ve now got new album called Spitfire. Think Glam, Ziggy Stardust, and loads of eye liner. More info on The Barfly’s website.
FTSE, The Social, Oxford Circus
FTSE (real name Sam Manville) is normally a one-man outfit but on this track he worked with FEMME. He is as much known for his remixes as his own releases. This is downbeat electronica at its best. More details on The Social’s website.
Wednesday 9 April
The Memory Hens, The Waiting Room, Oxford Circus
The Memory Hens are a five-piece built from the ashes of two previous bands. A slightly stuttering start and one name change later they have released this beautiful dreamy track. More details on the Waiting Room website.
Thursday 10 April
Very Tall Stories, Queen of Hoxton, Shoreditch
Such a great Soul track! These guys have come all the way from New Zealand to play for us and they have just released their second album Be Cool Make Love. More details on Facebook.
Friday 11 April
David Devant & His Spirit Wife, The Lexington, Angel
Weird, surreal, and very different. They describe themselves as “Like the bastard child of Bowie, Roxy Music and cult TV series The Prisoner which says it all really. More details on the Lexington website.
Saturday 12 April
The Dunwells & Rupert Stroud, Borderline, Oxford Street
This week’s Double Bill.
Rupert Stroud: originally from Leeds, Rupert is returning to the studio with Will Jackson to work on his third album due for release in 2014. The Dunwells: this track is from their album ‘Blind Sighted Faith’ which they released back in 2012, but they have also just released a new album called Follow The Road. More information on the Borderline website.
Sunday 13 April
Meg Cavanaugh, The Finsbury, Manor House
Megan is originally from Ohio but is now based in the UK. Her new album, The Musketeers Handbook has recently been released. More details on The Finsbury website.
