Save Me: 10 Alternative Uses For The Freddie Mercury Statue

The Queen musical We Will Rock You is to close at the Dominion Theatre after 12 years. This leaves a very real and pressing question: what’s to be done with the landmark Freddie Mercury statue, which towers over the theatre entrance? We asked our readers for ideas via Twitter and Facebook.

1. Stick it on the Fourth Plinth

fourthfreddie

The commonest suggestion would see the golden rocker permanently adorn Trafalgar Square’s empty plinth. It would also serve as an excellent way to wind up National Gallery Director Nicholas Penny. Some commenters — with a creative sense of proportion — even suggested that Mercury should supplant Nelson on top of the Square’s famous column.

2. Auction the statue

Another common, and very sensible, suggestion is to sell the mighty Freddie to the highest bidder and donate the proceeds to an AIDS charity.

3. Pagan ritual

wicker

Several readers suggested that the statue be employed for some kind of idolatry or pagan worship. @railtonrailton thought that a Wicker Man burning ritual might be in order.

4. Crossrail Bauble

Reader @JamesBadcock reckons “there must be somewhere to place it within the new Tottenham Court Road station development”. Indeed, Crossrail, which will stop here from 2018, is spending heavily on public art for its stations. What better way to retain a piece of local history and brighten up the atrium?

5. Make it the new Mayor

A larger-than-life figure with a talent for performance. A man who would regularly declare “I want to ride my bicycle”. A history of being Under Pressure. Freddie Mercury seems to have many of the attributes of our current Mayor, so why not install his golden simulacrum in City Hall? That was the suggestion of reader @CulturalSnow.

6. Give it to Fulham

@Relishresearch was the first of several readers to suggest gifting the statue to Fulham FC. The club has little if any connection to the singer, but that didn’t stop them erecting a plastic likeness of Michael Jackson a few years back. The King of Pop has now been evicted and given back to the club’s former owner, Mohammed Al Fayed. Perhaps the eccentric millionaire could take Freddie under his wing, too, and start a sculpture garden of dead singers.

7. Stick it on The Monument

The Monument to the Great Fire in the City of London is an oft-overlooked landmark. The @londonmonument account suggests “Swap it for my golden flame…Freddie would look pretty awesome on top of the Monument”. Well, Queen did have a song called Put Out The Fire.

8. On the centre of the London Eye

Perhaps the most bizarre suggestion comes from Liz Macfadyen on Facebook. While we quite like the idea of the oversized Mercury pinned to the middle of the London Eye, endlessly rotating above the water, that’s more Duran Duran’s style.

9. Stick it on the International Space Station

hadfield

Facebook user Jim Copley reckons Freddie should finally ‘break free’ of Earth’s atmosphere to become the centrepiece of the ISS. He does have an astral name, after all. Perhaps he could duet with fellow moustachioed star, Commander Chris Hadfield?

10. Leave it there

Reader @DavidSim suggests that the statue has become part of the urban landscape and should be left in place. Amen to that one.

Other suggestions

“It would look good on my balcony”: @SAFTweekend
“He could hold up the Somerset Levels”: @waynex
“Hosting the Hugos”: @arroberts
“I would take it and I would melt it down into currency and spend every penny campaigning to remove Queen music from every home, outlet and cloud in existence.” Susan Schultz via Facebook.

In addition, several readers thought our shining hero should be re-erected in Feltham, where Mercury and his family lived in the 1960s. Other locations include Wembley, Brighton, Camden and Hyde Park.

What’s your suggestion?

We should use the currency to buy MORE Queen records, and put them in the homes and work places of people like YOU, who have yet to learn to appreciate Queen & Freddie. Long Live the Legend!

  • Daniel_PY

The best vocalist in the history of popular music.

  • Ruth Noyes

Freddie Mercury was one of the few artists who ever touched my heart. If you all are gonna fight over this remarkable reminder of fun, innocence and sheer beauty, pass it on to meeee!!! I would wake up 24 hours a day to allow people to come and see it, no charge of course. He was, by all accounts, a decent human being. R.I.P. Dear Freddie…I wish I could have met you or have seen you in concert at least once.

  • David H

The comment by Susan Shultz is bizarre what’s her problem?

I like the idea of Freddie in front of Wembly Stadium. After all Queen played the greatest concert of all time there. 1985’s Live Aid.

  • sto.cazzo

    susan schultz should fucking die

  • Laura Day

Wembley stadium seems fitting to me as its in the show as the place of living rock and rock will live within us all, as long as Queen, We Will RockYou and our beloved Freddy remain in out thoughts and hearts,

  • Sandra Barbara

Since everyone on Earth wants him, put him on the moon. But Wembley would be a great choice also.

  • Joseph Davis

If leaving it there isn’t an option, then it should be re-erected at Wembly or (if possible) Send it to the Moon. Even if it misses, at least Freddie will be among the stars (quite literally).

  • Xavier Caine

It would look great at the end of my driveway. After all, he’s been on my bedroom walls for 35 years, he could probably do with the sunshine.

  • disqus_BxwboDTJaw

    Pagan ritual plz

  • Kitten87

Don’t end the show – problem solved!

  • Tess

They should put the statue wherever they want in London, (wembley, st James park…) but have beside the statue a very secured donation box (regularily emptied) for AIDS.

    • My name is not Susan

Great idea Tess. AIDS is the end-stage illness of HIV infection, so I would suggest a donation box for HIV charities. So sad the drugs keeping many alive were not around during Freddie’s time,he would still have been with us today.

  • Ed

Used as an Oscars statue next year

  • Alon Rizzo

12 years a slave (so to speak) he’s earned his keep, let him stay right where he is… It would be nice to see it for myself someday.
