Celebrity culture, fashion and art have all been growing closer over the last few years with recent exhibitions by Miles Aldridge highlighting the crossover appeal. Tyler Shields is an Los Angeles based photographer who sits firmly on the nexus of these three worlds.
He's renowned for glamorous photo shoots featuring celebrities like Lindsay Lohan and for creating vibrant images such as his series 'Chromatic' where the attractive young cast of the television series Revenge are covered with coloured powder.
His work has never had subtlety in mind, but his latest series is his most extreme shoot to date. Shields has taken a group of well dressed young actresses and actors and photographed them in various underwater locations whether it be a sea, a lake or in a bathtub.
The flowing dresses give the works a zero gravity feel and a surreal look, thus making it very different to traditional Hollywood celebrity photographs. It may be over the top and feel overly commercial to some but Shields continues to push the boat out to try something different and the results are both balletic and eye-catching.
Tyler Shields: Submerged is on at Imitate Modern, 27a Devonshire Street, W1G 6PN until 9 November. Entrance is free.
