Following the success of their previous lunchtime production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the St James Theatre has more snack-sized shows for you to shovel into your lunchbreak.
Two short Chekhov comedies, The Proposal and The Bear, will run on weekdays from 9 to 20 September at 1pm. Due to the sell-out success of the St James Theatre’s previous lunchtime shows, two performances will take place each day during the second week of the run, from 16 to 20 September at 12pm and 1pm.
The Proposal is a short, sharp satire on upper-middle-class attitudes towards marriage; while The Bear derives its comedy from the quarreling protagonists’ lack of self-awareness. In both, “tempers are lost, promises broken and pulses race as hearts are stopped.”
Both are produced by Butterfly, a theatre company dedicated to creating classics in your lunchbreak. You can take along your own sarnies to munch through the shows, or treat yourself to a £5 St James Theatre lunch bag.
The Proposal and The Bear run in the St James Theatre Studio, 12 Palace Street, SW1E 5JA, from 9 to 20 September, weekdays only. Tickets cost £8 in advance; £10 on the door. Visit stjamestheatre.co.uk to find out more.
