Camden council has approved a proposal to revamp the area around Centre Point and convert the building into a residential apartment block, reports Construction Enquirer.
Under the plans, modified slightly from the ones which we first covered last year, the building will be split into 82 flats, with a further 13 affordable units in a new block; controversially, the new building will be on the site of the Intrepid Fox pub. There will be a new plaza at ground level, and a general sprucing up of what is currently a windswept bus terminus, with new restaurants, shops and bars.
Although the project has been green-lit by Camden, there are still a few other legal hurdles in the way, notably a lawsuit filed by the owner of Paramount, the bar on top of the building, which still has 30 years left to run on its lease.
Designed by Richard Seifert and completed in 1966, Centre Point was famously unable to attract a single tenant for many years, a problem it is unlikely to have in its new incarnation given the increasing demand for prime property in the capital.
