A series of free guided walks particularly aimed at Londoners begins this week. Clerkenwell and Islington Guides Association launches the Festival of Walking, with free tours on weekdays throughout summer.

The series begins on 1 August (6.30pm), when Rob Smith leads The Makers of Modern London tour. Focussing on the period 1800-1850, this walk highlights the inventors, campaigners, engineers and philanthropists who made our city the largest in the world, and Clerkenwell's legacy of this time.

Further walks, on different themes, then take place during Tuesday lunchtimes (an ideal short break from the office, 1pm from St John's Gate), Wednesday mornings (11am from Farringdon station), and Thursday evenings (6.30pm from various locations). Topics covered include 'the grisly marketplace', 'waterways of Islington' and 'Clerkenwell at war'.

In all, 25 free walks are on offer. You're advised to browse through the programme here, and book ahead.
