It might have its own world-class event spaces, but even the Barbican needs to get out and stretch its legs now and then. The Beyond Barbican season sees the cultural centre reach out to a number of other venues across town…or at least the northern half of town. Here’s the lineup:
16 May: Folksters Eliza Carthy and Jim Moray team up for a gig at Union Chapel.
4-6 June: Neon Neon & National Theatre Wales present Praxis Makes Perfect, an immersive gig about Italian publisher Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, at Village Underground.
6 June: Versatile Israeli singer-songwriter Asaf Avidan wows Union Chapel.
19 June: The Gloaming, a supergroup mixing Irish folk and New York contemporary, play Union Chapel.
22 June-14 July: Explore a fairytale bank (you read that right) in immersive theatre production Bank on It by Theatre-Rites, at The Rose Lipman Building in De Beauvoir Town.
25-28 June: Impressive acrobatics in one of central London’s oldest churches sounds like a winning ticket. Catch the collaboration between vocal ensemble I Fagiolini and Australian company Circa for How Like An Angel in St Bartholomew-the-Great.
26 June-4 August: Artist Leandro Erlich will plug a gap in Ashwin Street, Dalston using mirrors, in the interactive artwork Dalston House. The artist gives a free talk at the house on 27 June.
3-21 July: The Paper Architect is a short play involving papercraft and video projection. You’ll find it in a corner of Leytonstone Library.
13-14 July: As part of this year’s Shoreditch Festival, Hoxton Street Market will be animated by the Barbican’s selection of theatre, music and dance.
13 July: Dalston’s Gillett Square will be packed all day with dance workshops and events for the whole family at Dance Nations Dalston.
25 July: New Sounds of Brazil presents three musical acts from that nation with very different styles, at Village Underground.
27-28 July: Open East Festival gives you the chance to visit the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park one year on from the Games. The event includes live music, children’s activities, art and eco design fairs, and a street food market.
Ticket prices vary, but all are on sale now.
