London Food & Drink News: 22 February

The Lord Nelson in Southwark is to host a one-week horse burger pop-up from Monday. The equine meat is sourced from Gamston Wood Farm at nearby Borough Market, and will set you back £11 for a burger, fries and ‘slaw. Runs 25 Feb – 2 March.

If you prefer your burger to be bovine, it’s worth visiting Burger Breakout which, after a stint at the Old Crown in Holborn, has shuffled north to House of Wolf in Upper Street, Islington. It opens, with a new tasting menu, next week.

Mezcal is threatening to become this year’s break-out drink for the aspirational trendster (inspired, perhaps, by the mezcal bar crawl we undertook last October). To help meet the growing demand, Amathus is introducing a new range of mezcals from Alipus and Los Danzantes at their Soho and Leadenhall Market stores from next week.

The latest venture from Rushmore Group (The Player, Giant Robot) is Rotary Bar and Diner on City Road. It opens a week from today for a ten month spell. Food will be provided by the peripatetic Yum Buns; if you haven’t tried one before at their various street food market stalls, this is your chance.

In more Shoreditch bar news, this is the last week for the first incarnation of Jubjub, the member’s-only bar on the second floor of Callooh Callay in Rivington Street. As of 1 March they’re ditching the key-entry system and opening it up each month to a “series of experiential, transformational events running for weeks at a time with different brands.” The first one is called Absinthe and Oysters, which suggests the Jubjub won’t be ditching the delightful decadence that it’s known for.
