Spot The London Locations In New Folk Music Video

One of Londonist's favourite folk artists, Sam Lee, has released a new music video ahead of this evening's BBC Folk Awards. The Mercury Award-nominated singer (who you can hear speaking on Londonist Out Loud here) is up for three gongs at the Glasgow ceremony.

London-born Lee, who is also a live music promoter and folk song collector, is filmed carrying a strangely shaped boat around a number of London locations in the video for 'Good Bye My Darling', a song from his Mercury Award-nominated album 'Ground Of Its Own'. Some — Smithfield Market, for example — are landmarks; other areas, especially around the river, are less obvious.

"I really wanted to make a film that looked at the acoustic maps of London and take in locations that have a musical and balladic resonance both towards the song and historically," Lee tells us. "The song is about transportation and social injustice so I wanted to look at the river in its benevolent yet emotive forces as a carrier and passage, and a means of escape."

Looking for "institutions that have and have had a strong effect on the social welfare in the country" led Lee to the Bank of England and High Court.

Let us know which locations you spot in the comments.

Sam Lee & Friends perform in London on four consecutive nights next month: The Bedford, Balham (13 February), Cafe Oto, Dalston (14 February), Cecil Sharp House (15 February) and The Tabernacle (16 February).
