Could Eros Be Wrapped In A Snow Globe For Christmas?

One of London’s most famous statues could be wrapped in a protective bubble in the run up to Christmas, it was announced today. The statue commonly known as Eros in Piccadilly Square is apparently a target for vandals during the festive period, and often gets covered in hoarding to ward off errant snowballs and drunken climbers.

Westminster Council is now considering a proposal to enclose the aluminium figure in an inflatable PVC sheath resembling a snow globe. The scheme would also allow for plenty of advertising screens round the base, in a part of town where intrusive commercialism is part of the cultural heritage rather than something to gnash teeth about.

A decision is expected in the next few weeks. The first installation would be for Christmas 2013.
