What’s On In London Theatre: 26 Jun-2 Jul

Our guide to the top theatre, dance, and cabaret shows opening in London this week

THEATRE
Tonight, the London Classic Theatre comes to the Greenwich with Equus, Peter Shaffer’s unique psychological thriller. Also opening tonight is Chicken at the Trafalgar Studios; it’s the West End premiere for Mike Batistick’s dark comedy about two childhood friends, an unhappy wife and a sickly rooster who’s being groomed for an illegal cockfight. Chicken stars Coronation Street’s Craig Kelly, and is directed by Sam Neophytou.

Over at the Royal Court, you can see Stephen Mangan and Lisa Dillon star in Birthday by Joe Penhall. Opening night is Thursday; there are cheaper tickets on offer if you get down there before then. The play follows Lisa and Ed who’re having another baby; only this time, they’re determined to do things differently. Check out the trailer below; this looks like a fun, dark ride. Finally, the Sell A Door Theatre Company brings Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic mystery The Hound of the Baskervilles to the Greenwich Theatre from Monday.

DANCE
From Saturday, you can catch a mixed bill of dance by Frederick Ashton and Bronislava Nijinska at the Royal Opera House. The three pieces on offer are Birthday Offering; A Month In The Country; and Les Noces. Tickets start at £4, so this could be a cheap treat if you’re into ballet.

CABARET
Good time gals the Hurly Burly Girls are back, taking up residence at the Duchess Theatre for the summer. The Hurly Burly Show – Naughty But Nice! is an all-singing, all-dancing revue with a contemporary twist, led by Miss Polly Rae. Listen out for musical mash-ups from artists such as Kylie, Britney, Prince, Beyonce, Madonna and Lady Gaga.

LAST CHANCE
Saturday is your last chance to see Noises Off at the Novello; The Witness at the Royal Court; and Children’s Children at the Almeida. It’s also the final night of the DruidMurphy season at the Hampstead Theatre.
