Police Called To Parliamentary Punch-Up

An MP, believed to be Labour MP Eric Joyce, is being held by police following an altercation in the Houses of Parliament bar last night.

Police attended an incident in Strangers Bar where Conservative MP Stuart Andrew was allegedly assaulted. A Scotland Yard spokesman said:

“We were called at approximately 10.50pm last night to reports of a disturbance at a bar within the House of Commons. A man aged in his 50s was arrested by officers on suspicion of assault. He remains in custody in a central London police station. Inquiries are continuing.”

The government is understood to be considering minimum alcohol prices and earlier closing times in the House of Commons bar to discourage binge-drinking and anti-social behaviour*.

*Not really. We made that up.

From Michael Crick on Twitter: “it seems police were reluctant to come to Strangers’ Bar at first as anxious about parliamentary privilege. Not sure it protects assault!”
