Two Transport Themed Volunteer Opportunities

If you made a new year's resolution to get into voluntary work this year, here are two opportunities that might tickle your transport nerd fancy.

Messing about on the river: The Environment Agency (EA) is looking for volunteer assistant lock keepers to help out at all 44 locks on the non-tidal Thames during this summer's boating season. The EA says it is "expecting a busy year with Thames with the Queen’s Jubilee pageant and the Olympic rowing at Dorney Lake".

It's the second year that volunteers have been invited, with over 80 stepping up last year. You don't need to live on the river, or have any previous experience although general fitness and a keen interest in river life are essential, as is the capacity to offer at least one day per week between May and September. Apply now.

Drive a choo-choo train: Kew Bridge Steam Museum are looking for people to drive their steam railway, the only live steam line in London.

The railway is open every Sunday between April and October, and some Saturdays. You must be able-bodied and aged between 18-80 but no experience is necessary. You must, however, be committed enough to undertake a training programme of two sessions a month over 18 months. Apply now.
