The sun rose an hour early this morning, 20m above Trafalgar Square, glowing boldly through a dark January Monday. A flock of early birds/night owls were there for the special 'sunrise', twittering an excitable dawn chorus of reaction as the bright installation lit up the square:

@AboutLondon #TrafalgarSun is beautifully huge! twitpic.com/8an8ny

@DarkAeon This art installation is currently in Trafalgar Square - is awesome!! #TrafalgarSun

@MrMulholland #trafalgarsun getting brighter down here :-) http://t.co/mR3F6JKy

@Emanix I really want to take this thing home with me. Want it to wake me up in the morning! #TrafalgarSun

@Vikki_Wallis Brightened up my morning #TrafalgarSun http://yfrog.com/h83u2dgj

And Stuart Witts got some incredible Instagram shots, which lend Trafalgar Sun a fiery halo.

Trafalgar Sun will stay in the London sky a whole hour longer than our actual sun, so go down to the Square after work, relax in deckchairs and take in the extra light as darkness falls. Trafalgar Sun-set will happen around 7.30pm.

Just bear in mind that — as Graham Dallas, who's been queueing for the Leonardo exhibition at the National Gallery since the early hours, points out — "sadly the #trafalgarsun emits no heat".

Tweet about your sunny experience with the hashtag #TrafalgarSun and like the Tropicana Facebook page for Trafalgar Sun news, chat, competitions, photos and video throughout the day.

The sun was created by artists’ collective Greyworld and will dazzle Trafalgar Square for one day only. The installation was commissioned by Tropicana for their Brighter Mornings campaign, which aims to cheer people up during one of the most miserable times of the year.
