Preview: Amy Winehouse Pop Art By Gerald Laing

The artistic tributes to the late Ms Winehouse show no sign of slowing. Depictions of Amy have popped up in the streets, galleries and even a Tube station since her death in July. A new show of Winehouse portraits, created in 2008 by artist Gerald Laing, opens at Thomas Gibson Fine Art in Mayfair today.

Laing is a well-known pop artist whose more famous works include a portrait of Bridget Bardot, a series inspired by the Abu Ghraib prison camp and the Lineout sculpture at Twickenham Stadium (images here).

According to the artist, the Winehouse series "is concerned with the myth, and portrays her as she appeared to us, the public, via the media. Now that the drama has ended, and all is quiet, I hope it will be seen as a  tribute from one artist to another."

Amy Winehouse by Gerald Laing is at Thomas Gibson Fine Art, 31 Bruton Street until 10 November. Entrance is free.
