Suggestions of shows to see in some of London's smaller galleries
Bitter Sweet: New Paintings by Chen Hongzhu: Big-eyed, Ryden-esque portraits with subtle suggestions of danger and disturbance from this “New Generation” Chinese artist examining “how Chinese youth grapple with an open consumer society.” On view Tuesday to Saturday 11am-6.30pm or by appointment until 6 October at James Freeman Gallery, 354 Upper Street N1 0PD.
Cryptic: A “provocative and playful exhibition by a group of artists exploring the hidden meanings in the world around them ... to reveal surprising perspectives on the extraordinary and the mundane.” On view daily from 12pm-6pm until 12 September at Crypt Gallery, St Pancras Church, Euston Road NW1 2BA.
Feral Family (Mammalian Pastoral) by Kirsty Whiten: Large scale painting depicting moments of “family intimacy set in a psychedelic forest.” On view Tuesday to Sunday 11am-7pm until 25 September at Stolenspace, Dray Walk, The Old Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane E1 6QL.
Ludo: Metamorphosis: This first London solo exhibition for Paris based Ludo features “quasi-mutant images” in sculpture, drawing and print. The show is also the international launch of the artist's book, OPUS #23 with an introduction by Marc & Sara Schiller of Wooster Collective. A limited 25 signed copies will be available for sale during the exhibition. On view Thursday to Sunday 12pm−6pm and by appointment from 10 September until 7 October at High Roller Society, 10 Palmers Road E2 OSY.
