A taste of what’s what in London food and drink news:
The first episode of Mexican Food Made Simple aired this week on Channel 5. The show features chef Thomasina Miers of London’s Mexican food chain, Wahaca, as she explores Mexican cuisine here and in the kitchen of her London home and offers plenty of recipes. Look for it on Tuesdays at 7.30pm.
London’s oldest French restaurant, Mon Plaisir on Monmouth Street, will offer three course meals plus an aperitif and music by a live accordionist for £28.50 on Bastille Day, the 14th, from 7pm.
Japanese restaurant Tsuru has two tasty events coming up in the next couple of weeks. Whisky experts Neil and Joelle of Cask Strength will host a whisky tasting masterclass at the Mansion House Tsuru on the 13th of July. They’ll be showcasing several Japanese Whiskys and matching each one with dishes from Tsuru’s menu. Tickets are £45 per person. On the 19th, a sushi masterclass will be hosted. Now open noon to midnight every Saturday and Sunday, Red Market brings street food festivities to the heart of Shoreditch. Look for their happenings – which include an urban beach, summer cocktail bar, live street art, petanque and more – around 288-299 Old Street with a line up of vendors including Kim Chi Cult Sliders, Anna Mae’s Pulled Pork, Healthy Yummies, Taco Truck and The Crepe Guy.
