Gay Couple “Removed” From A Soho Pub “For Kissing”

People smoking outside the John Snow Pub

The John Snow Pub, Broadwick Street, Soho

A popular Soho pub found itself facing accusations of homophobia today after a gay couple claimed they were asked to leave the premises for kissing.

According to reports, the pair were on their first date together, enjoying drinks after a meal at the John Snow on Broadwick Street. But when things took on a more romantic turn, they say they were asked to stop by another customer who claimed to be the landlord. They refused. A couple of hours later a woman claiming to be the landlady asked them to leave the place saying they were being “obscene”. Jonathan Williams adds that the landlord, whose identity was later established by witnesses who were themselves ejected on questioning what happened, grabbed him by his jacket. A plain clothes officer got involved, according to some versions.

The story came to light after Williams used Twitter to share his misadventure. The tweet was reposted dozens of times; celebrity tweeters such as actress Emma Kennedy, Ben Goldacre and journalist Caitlin Moran lent their clout to the story.

The pub’s reaction so far has been less than helpful by refusing to comment to journalists or issuing pithy comments like “I have every right to kick people out if I wish.” or “Can you just stop calling this number please, or we’ll have you done for harassment.”

While landlords do have the right to ask customers to leave, they must also abide with anti-discrimination regulations applying to the provision of goods and services. The police have been contacted and are dealing with the matter.

The John Snow is operated by the independent brewery, Samuel Smiths, who have not commented yet. The couple involved in the incident plan to complain to the company.

Protests in the form of kiss-ins are being organised via Facebook on Friday and next week.

A similar story took place last year at the Greencoat Boy pub in Westminster when a group of LGBT people was asked to leave resulting in a full apology and compensation from owners Punch Taverns.

    Hate me now, Twitterers.

I was in this very pub recently and next to me were two gays kissing. It was actually offputting (heavy petting would describe it more accurately) but note they stayed until closing and no one said a word.

Pub has not responsed so I’m reserving judgement. Maybe there are more factors than we appreciate; sure it’s fun to jump on a bandwagon but personally I prefer to hear both sides before lampooning anyone.

Demonstration is already in progress but what if you’re all making a big mistake?

if str58s can kiss, why cant gays do the same? Except for bigotry, and anxiety induced by churches who think that gay people should be demonized. Churches?????????????????

      • Philwarri

        demonised, fucking executed

I think it is absolutely disgusting. People should not indulge in “romantic kissing” in public, whether gay or not.

That behaviour is not necessary in public and should be carried out in private. I never kiss my wife in public, but we have a lot of fun behind closed doors!

and, Maix, reserving judgement nowadays is a novel idea, let’s hope it catches on :-)

  • Kate

Maix, referring to gay people as ‘gays’ shows exactly what side of the debate you’re on. You can ‘reserve your judgement’ but your choice of phrase says it all.

And Ampers, you’re clearly a stuck-up old prude; people kissing in public is about as shocking and outrageous as women in trousers.

Until you’ve been harassed or discriminated against because of your sexuality, I’d think twice about everything you take for granted. I’ve never in my life heard of a straight couple being kicked out of a social space for kissing, however amourously.

  • Davymeerb

    bigots still allowed

  • Maix

    Wow.

Said ‘gays’ to try to avoid the ‘which sex were they?’ question, but apparently Kate now knows what side of the debate I’m on. I thought Ampers gave quite a funny response but maybe I’m a bigot.

I won’t provide the usual justifications to prove anything to the contrary but had a straight couple been doing what the GAYS were, I’d have been just as put out. I guess this means I don’t like anyone.

PS Kate – are you fit?

  • Kate

Maix, you’re just a run-of-the-mill ignorant human. Because it’s so difficult to make the effort to type the words ‘gay person’.

  • Atreyu

If it was my pub, I’d throw them out as well! I support the landlord.

    • Anonymous

If it was my pub I would throw you out.

thanks -= I couldnt have said it better.

I’m str8 but I have many gay friends. while I wont initiate a kiss, I will respond with a kiss, eg on the neck or side of the facecheek. Not into tongue swaping

For me , kissing my gay friends is not at alla bout sex but about respect.

  • jem

i (female) was asked not to kiss my girlfriend by a pub landlady once because all the boys were lining up to watch + it was causing some disturbance. it was moderate, sensible public kissing – agree there is kissing in public and heavy petting; not keen on the latter happening on table next to me, straight or gay. who knows?

  • Burny_2005

Assuming the landlord has no problem with heterosexual petting, this is just plain homophobia which has no place in todays world.

    • http://profiles.google.com/stephen1553 Steve Kay

It has lots of places in this world. Like the horrible catholic church of Hitelr not yet excommunicated. go to http://www.nobeliefs.com/nazis.htm

And the evangelical churches – most of them, who in the USA were the supporters of slavery, segregation, and the Ku Klux Klan. who hated blacks and now have a new victim

Just a reminder that we’ve only heard one side of the story so far. Yes, there have been independent witnesses, but until we hear the pub’s side of things the picture is incomplete.

    • http://twitter.com/jonnelledge Jonn Elledge

@Matt – Granted, but the landlords are not exactly rushing to offer their side of the story, are they? They’ve had ample time to mention that there is a different interpretation of events, and they haven’t, and now it’s a national story. Good.

Also, I’m having a bad week, and a nice righteous witch hunt will make me feel better. This story has removed the need to go trawling the last effluence from Jan Moir or Liz Jones. Which is nice.

I didn’t even realise Jon Snow was gay.

    Anyone for a sausage roll?

I’d prefer no kissing in pubs but couldn’t care less what gender the kissers were….

I was on the (crowded) tube last week and I had a teenage couple slobbering 30 cms away from mine (and many other people’s faces). Like molluscs mating…really…do you HAVE to do that at 8.15 in the morning.

Who’s up for a retaliatory hetero kiss-in down Compton St then!?

  • Pickles

Why have a pub in soho if you want only straight people showing affection? move to the countryside where these things are kept behind closed doors, not in the heart of londons gay scene,
Hope the kiss-in shows them, nice to see such support for it from straight people too.
I really hope the brewery are looking for new managers, its the only course of action that can be taken!
This is no different from the case of the 2 guys getting turned away from the B&B, if they didn’t fight for what was right society will never move forward into an accepting world. I hope the 2 men concerned take them to the cleaners, they deserve a public aplogy at least!!!

  • Darran

I think all gays should be sent to the moon where they can practice their discusting behaviour with others of the same kind, without upsetting NORMAL people! Why should these weirdo`s be allowed to flaunt their sick ideas in front of innocent people trying to have a drink? I saw a recent advertisment saying `we`er gay get used to it`,well why should we,and why would we want to? As for pickles comment,it should be kept behind closed doors, wherever you live! And, the two in the B&B,well again we have two `gay boys`upsetting NORMAL tourists on holiday with their families, and we`er supposed to accept that, really?

    • Jean-Michel Genre

The moon is made of cheese…why should gay people get to have more cheese than the rest of us?

    • http://twitter.com/GaspardWinckler Joe McNally

I think illiterates who insist on flaunting their ignorance should be gassed like rabid badgers.

      • Jean-Michel Genre

I honestly thought Darran was laying it on so thickly, he must be taking the piss…

For Darran, hope you have a child or grandchild who is gay someday, maybe that would make you think a little differently.
My son is gay, he didn’t like it but has come to terms with the fact that this is who he is, he should be able to live his life happily and confidently, its not people’s choosing you know. I love him because he IS “normal” happy, caring, dependable and well liked by others.
The point to my comment was that a landlord should not take up management of a bar in the heart of a gay village if seeing 2 boys have a harmless kiss is going to offend them, very poor judgement on their part!!!

  • Smash greed

Quite simply, if John Galliano lost his job for anti-semantic behaviour, the manageress and self-proclaimed landlord should also lose their jobs for homophobic behaviour. If the person claiming to be a plain-clothes policeman also sided with the pub, he too should lose his job, or face charges for fraudulently presenting himself as a member of the police force.

  • tom

Well done pub, i think it is disgusting and wrong and why should i be forced to accept it just because they think it is normal it is not.
I would give the Landlord a promotion and make him Pm of the Uk. Disgusting makes my stomache churn!!!!

Not for the first time, I find myself curious about the link between bigotry and illiteracy.

  • Dave

Wow, I’m actually quite angry & very disappointed at the fact that so many people in the UK (on forums & conversations) are either so quick to critisise the landlord/lady, or are really homophobic. Also, we all don’t really know the whole story, as we weren’t there.

Personally, I believe in democracy and equal rights, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t respect the wishes/beliefs of the venue or other poeple either (within reason).

For example, if I owned a pub and a nudist walked in, I personally wouldn’t think any different of him/her, but I would ask them to either put on clothes & come back, or please leave. Or if I ran a traditional pub and someone walks in with a rude anti-monarchy shirt I’d also ask them to kindly cover it if they have a jacket. As although I respect that everyone has freedom of opinion & life, there’s no need to do somthing intentionally against the wishes of the establishment in question (which these two people did, as they were asked to stop, but they continuted to kiss regardless anyway, at which point they were asked to leave).

Personally, if I went to a family run b&b (for example) which was run by a strict christian or other religious family, who didn’t approve of unmarried couples sleeping in the same bed together, or drinking alcohol, etc…, I’d respect the fact that I should also show some consideration to their beliefs as well, and show some compromise.
