Basketball Backed For 2012 Olympics In Basketball Week

Basketball Week is bouncing through London with a pop up court this week to promote hoop shooting ahead of the weekend's NBA games at the O2 where the New Jersey Nets will play the Toronto Raptors.

In a piece of PR pleasing timing, the British Olympic Association have announced that British Basketball has "met and exceeded" the requirements to participate in the 2012 Olympics and fully supports fielding both male and female teams in the host nation places at the Games. It's not a done deal yet however, as Basketball - uniquely among Olympic sports - requires team approval from the International Federation. A decision is expected on 13 March.

While it's good news for British Basketball, the BOA itself is feeling the strain of attempts to field a full Team GB to the Games due to a significant funding shortfall.

Tickets are still available for the NBA games at the O2 on Friday and Saturday night.
