Surcharge For Reinstated Late Night Thames Clipper Service

The new timetable that cut late evening river services between Central London and Woolwich in November last year made regular users understandably cross. The Thames Clippers Passengers Discussion Group has provided a forum for airing dissatisfaction reporting failures on remaining river boat services and campaigning for reinstatement of the night boats home.

Lib Dem Assembly Member, Caroline Pidgeon has been brandishing the political baton on behalf of users and season ticket holders. A recent meeting with Thames Clippers’ MD, Sean Collins, resulted in this statement, published on Surrey Dock’s local councillor Lisa Rajan’s website:

Last week I met with Mike Weston of TfL and can confirm that we intend to introduce a late evening service with 2 sailings departing from Embankment at 22:08 and 23:08, this is subject to TfL board approval on our proposed pricing as there will be no discounted tickets and our season ticket holders will be required to pay a supplement. This is the only way that we can see a late evening service being viable without any external financial support.

So, good news that some late night service will be re-introduced but bad news for season ticket holders who will be forced to pay a premium for the privilege. We can’t blame users in the discussion group for suggesting cuts were just a cynical way to bring in a supplementary charge, given the view that the service is overpriced to start with. But some residents may be happy with the compromise, if the surcharge is cheaper than a cab home.

Or Thames Clippers could think outside the box, perhaps taking on one of the users’ ideas: “I bet if it was called the Boris Boat, cost £2 per head, had the bar open and sold chips on the pier it would be full – and the bar would do huge business!”

On a related note, Andrew Gilligan has blogged about Boris Johnson’s broken promises on the river, lamenting the year that has passed since the rather exciting ‘Rate of Knots‘ report was published, envisioning a “Water-borne tube line for the Thames’.

I am very disappointed in Sean Collins. I bought an annual season ticket in September in expectation of a year’s worth of full service. A little over a month later, and 3 hours’ worth of services have been cut, which has been going on for 4 months now.

Although reinstating a 22:08 and 23:08 are good moves (and presumably there would have to be corresponding West-bound services from Woolwich), adding a supplement to my annual season ticket is not on. Given that the service is more expensive than a Zone 4 rail season ticket where I live in Woolwich, the pricing is not competitive in the first place. To demand more money is not fair to season ticket holders – if anything, we should demand a refund for the proportion of the season ticket for which the service has been suspended these past 4 months.

There is now an extra boat at Tower during peak time, but these are not the full sized boats we’re used to but are the half-sized or near-fishing boat sized boats, with no bars on board and of less comfort. These are hardly improvements in the service.

I am glad that the Lib Dem Assembly Member has pushed this case with Thames Clippers – but there is more that still needs to be done to placate affected season ticket holders.
