East London “Gay Free Zone” Defaced

You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist - Indira Gandhi

Some ugly stickers have been spotted in east London, declaring the area a “gay free zone” which is wrong when read as fact and wrong when interpreted as a potential outcome of local regeneration. Gay-friendly bars in Shoreditch, a school in Whitechapel and possibly other areas yet to be discovered have had the message of intolerance, distributed by an as yet unconfirmed group. While police investigate who could be behind these incitements to hatred and abuse, locals have been fighting back.

A group of eight friends spent last Friday touring the area in a Walk of Love, going to the spots where these anti-gay messages have been seen, defacing them and replacing them with messages of love, tolerance and understanding. Instead of fighting fire with more fire, the group are pouring soothing waters in the form of pasted quotes by Indira Gandhi, Anne Frank and Erica Jong, taping over the offending stickers not with more intolerance of their intolerance but with a different message altogether.

Another Walk of Love is scheduled for tonight, starting at 6pm, setting off from Shoreditch Town Hall with the approval of Hackney and Tower Hamlets councils, with the aim of changing the message to change hearts and minds. Bring your own quotes, masking tape and open mind to the walk. More information on the Walk of Love can be found at the Walk of Love Facebook events page.

Wow. Your self-censorship is positively creepy. On clicking your link to view pictures of these very ugly stickers declaring the area a “gay free zone” they are (surprise) emblazoned with quotes from the Koran saying “ARISE AND WARN …AND FEAR ALLAH. VERILY ALLAH IS SEVERE IN PUNISHMENT”.

So the absolutely central fact of the story – that sections of the Muslim community in East London are trying to menace and intimidate the growing community of gay hipsters in Shoreditch – is omitted from your post. Journalism this aint.

Sadly, if the BBC report is to be believed, the Walk of Love organisers are (a bit like yourself) “keen not to point the finger of blame at any particular religious group”. Um, why the fook not??

There’s “not fighting fire with fire” and there’s wilfully ignoring the bleedin’ obvious out of a ridiculous fear of causing offence.

Well, I’m a gay man happy to point my big gay finger at the hate-filled Muslim extremists who put up these disgusting, fascistic posters and say (if I may paraphrase Mahatma Gandhi):

“Sod off you horrible little medieval zealots”.

Hi Dave! (or should I say… “dpfeffel”).

Do you know *for sure* who pasted up those posters? There are various theories that it could be far-right English nationalists looking to foment discord and mistrust. And even if it were Muslim groups, it is by no means fair to tar every Muslim in Tower Hamlets with the same brush.

Johann Hari has a great post up today on this subject, and I can’t disagree with any of it:

Oh, and I forgot to add: you’re right that neglecting to mention the religion of those who’ve been plastering these signs up makes this a pretty blinkered report, to say the least.

Hi Dean. Thanks for the back-up. Yeah DePfeffel is a bit embarrassing, looking back…

It is sad that they are using messages of “tolerance” from Indira Gandhi, a woman who suspended India’s constitution and ruled by decree, imprisoned political opponents and was convicted of electoral fraud by India’s high court. Not to mention her and engaged in a campaign of forced sterilisation of the poor.

    A shining example of tolerance.
