Walthamstow Gets Speakers' Corner

Stoneydown Park in Walthamstow is to get its very own Speakers' Corner, with an opening ceremony taking place this Friday. The series of podiums was designed by Central St Martin's students in consultation with local residents. The open-air rallying point was the idea of the Speakers' Corner Trust, which aims to promote 'active, engaged citizens'. Walthamstow, it turns out, has a fine reputation for politically mobilised residents. Disraeli was schooled here, historian Peter Hennessey lives nearby, and Atlee and Bevan also have strong local connections (although, in the latter case, we're admittedly talking about Kula Shaker's bassist Alonza Bevan and not the mastermind of the NHS). Possibly first up on the soapbox is a Mr B. Harvey of E17, who will repeat his long-standing motion to get 'everybody in the House of Love'.
