Strata Wins The Carbuncle Cup

1207_strata.jpg The conspicuous apartment block at Elephant & Castle has won this year’s Carbuncle Cup, the annual award administered by Building Design magazine that seeks to recognise the most flagrantly offensive new build over the past year. The judges noted that, while in an ordinary year the shortlisted “Bezier Bum” at Old Street would have won, it was the “pungent aroma of boy-musk” that wafts around Strata, along with its “Philishave stylings”, which secured the prize. On our visit earlier this year, the developers were proud of their project, particularly its green credentials; they may not be so eager to highlight this unwelcome gong.

A little harsh methinks…I think it looks more unwieldy than it is by the relatively low-rise skyline around it. Still, what do I know?

    A bit harsh.

I think it’s made to look more unwieldy than it is by the surrounding low-rise.

A fair point, and perhaps it’s being judged too harshly because it’s the first skyscraper in an area that, a decade from now, will be full of ’em.

Well, quite. How ugly would have been something that, as BDonline are asking, would be in keeping with its surroundings?!

something like that perhaps…? (which is the drawing of an early plan for the site)
