The conspicuous apartment block at Elephant & Castle has won this year’s Carbuncle Cup, the annual award administered by Building Design magazine that seeks to recognise the most flagrantly offensive new build over the past year. The judges noted that, while in an ordinary year the shortlisted “Bezier Bum” at Old Street would have won, it was the “pungent aroma of boy-musk” that wafts around Strata, along with its “Philishave stylings”, which secured the prize. On our visit earlier this year, the developers were proud of their project, particularly its green credentials; they may not be so eager to highlight this unwelcome gong.
