Camden Fringe Review: Matt Kirshen @ Sheephaven Bay

mattkirshen.jpg A last minute stand up slot at the delightfully makeshift Sheephaven Bay was irresistible to Matt Kirshen, despite his decision to leave Edinburgh alone and have a quiet August. Five nights on the residential back streets of NW1 present an opportunity to experiment and with minimal preparation and promotion, he seems genuinely chuffed - bemused, even - so many turn up to see him.

Relaxed from the off, Matt delivers a charming, friendly set with subject matter swooping from national stereotypes to provoking the BNP, from how to keep your house kosher yet still enjoy bacon to challenging scientologists about statistics. A story about naive teenage backpacking in Bordeaux armed only with GCSE French abuts straight rimming and we're left pondering the perils of having sex to a radio station whose eclectic late night playlist can totally ruin cunnilingus.

The show is playful, thoughtful, fresh and funny, although some of the material feels like its unsure of its audience. Indeed, he's unsure he'll even get an audience tonight given its 6pm showtime. If you can get there, you won't be disappointed and he'll be over the moon.

Matt Kirshen is at The Sheephaven Bay at 6pm tonight. All tickets at the Camden Fringe are £7.50. There's loads more on at the Fringe until 29th August: check the website.
