Bikes are piled up after the afternoon rush hour
Cycle Hire bikes piled up near Royal Festival Hall, as far as the eye can see. Over 100 of them. At first blush it looks like some pesky delinquents have been preparing them for sale to unsuspecting punters down on Brick Lane.
But this chaotic scene is in fact orchestrated by scheme operator Serco, who are charged with the mammoth task of ensuring that bikes remain evenly distributed around London. The above picture was taken at around 6.30pm yesterday, when employees were grabbing bikes as they were cycled in by Surrey-bound commuters catching their train from Waterloo.
This excellent website by Tom Taylor, which shows the popularity of each docking station, currently ranks Concert Hall Approach 2 (pictured above) as the most popular, with 294 bikes passing through in the past 24 hours. It's likely that scenes such as the one above will become more common once the bikes are available to everybody, and not just pre-registered members.
