Which Bits Of London Get Photographed The Most?

geotagmap2.jpg

Big Ben? Possibly. London Eye, probably. Canning Town, probably not. It’s easy to make guesses at the most photographed locations around town, but the rise in geolocated imagery now provides actual data. Eric Fischer has used over 73,000 photos from Flickr and Picassa, overlaid on an OpenStreetMap layer, to generate this view of London (larger image here).

Naturally, the West End, South Bank and Tower Bridge areas resemble a haemorrhaging Etch-a-Sketch. There are clear peaks in the City corresponding to St Paul’s, Monument, and the Gherkin. Photogenic spots outside of the centre are also represented, such as Greenwich and Kew. And we presume that’s Wembley to the top left.

Eric has extended the idea to many cities around the world in his Geotaggers’ World Atlas.

With thanks to @jezbravo for the tip.

This is a fantastic idea, love it!

I’m probably misunderstanding how geotagging works, but why are photos represented by lines rather than points?

(nice to see a small hotspot around Crystal Palace park, too)

I think the lines are the underlying street map and the photos are represented by massing of points.

Bit of a bump, but, according to the author

“the lines connect places where the same person took two pictures within 10 minutes of each other”

There’s a sketch frog staring viciously at an earthworm – or is it just me an rorschach? :D

I think the tiny darker cluster over to the far left is Wembley and the larger paler area just NW is Hampstead Heath.

I wish I could do this for all our jobs sites. That would be cool to see after so many years in the business.

This is an amazing data. Still the Big Ben is the symbol of London. But the London eye is becoming a tourists favorite.
