London On The Cheap: 18-24 March

Spring is here! Flowers near London Wall by cafedereves. For more of this, Kennington is definitely the place to be this weekend.

Spring has sprung but we're still skint so, happily, there's lots to do with a skip in your step and bugger all in the bank.

Tonight: Get a free gig fix at the Fox & Firkin, 316 Lewisham High Street. South East London is the new rock 'n' roll. Or something.

Friday: The Telegraph Hill Festival continues. Tonight try sassy Elizabethan Cabaret which involves a short walk. Meet in Telegraph Hill Centre Foyer 8pm, £3.

Saturday: Two great things for wonderful spring weather: Explore the beautiful Building Exploratory on Regents Canal in Hackney between 10.30am-2.30pm. It's a free, drop in, open day with creative activities for the kids.

Fancy a spot of cheap afternoon film? The Scarlet Pimpernel is being screened in the Sainsbury Wing Theatre of the National Gallery at 2.30pm, £4/3 (book online).

South of the river, it's the delightful sounding Kennington Garden Society's spring show at St Anselm's Church, admission just 50p for blooms galore, handicrafts and all that old school stuff in a churchyard. Open from 2.30pm.

Sunday: Back in Kennington, Roots and Shoots have an amazing Spring Science Open Day planned between 11am-4pm today featuring frogs, bees and foraging. See the Trellick Tower beehive! Swap seeds! Buy honey! All kinds of aceness and totally free.

Still on the sunny side of the river, Transpontine brings us excellent lit theory pop culture crossover news: Space Station Sixty Five in East Dulwich hosts the launch of Adventures in Kate Bush and Theory. Drop by, have a cup of tea, a slice of cake and meet the author between 2-5pm.

The London Word Festival hosts Scrabble Sunday at the Pembury Tavern, Hackney. Free, 4-10.30pm, RSVP on Facebook. Probably a good idea to take your own set. And if you don't like Scrabble there's always Buckaroo.

Monday: You must have walked past it hundreds of times - the Topolski Mural at Waterloo. Hear Daniel Topolski talk about "Feliks Topolski: Eye witness to the 20th Century" at a free Gresham College lecture at Museum of London at 1pm. Get down to Waterloo after (or after work, you 9-5ers) and see the thing itself as entry to Topolski Century is free on Mondays.

Tuesday: London Earth Mysteries present "Sacred turf and holy places" with Chris Roberts riffing on football and worship at the Theosophical Society, 50 Gloucester Place, W1 7pm. £4.50/4 (members £3).

Cafe Scientifique at the Photographers' Gallery discusses processing colour from 7pm, £5/3.

While over at The Roxy in Borough, Zombieland's screening, 8pm, £3

Wednesday: Try The Westbury Pub Quiz in Kilburn and be in with a chance to win their rollover cash prize. 8pm start, £2 per person, starring "Spider" from Coronation Street as the quiz master.
