Reviews Revisited: Pizza East

It’s only been a matter of weeks since we first reviewed Pizza East. But in that time, we’ve returned and have had such an unpleasant experience we would be remiss in our duty to our readers not to reconsider our original take on this trendy Shoreditch restaurant.

Our second visit was on a terribly cold and rainy Saturday night. Before we could even step inside, the maitre d’ raised his hand in our faces (in exaggerated “talk to the hand” fashion) as we opened the door and made us wait in the damp and frigid night air while he dealt with apparently more important customers.  While out in the cold, we could see plenty of room for us to stand inside. When he finally granted us entry, we informed him of our friend’s reservation to which he shrugged us off to a colleague who had been sitting idly while he sorted out his VIPs’ evening plans.

There to attend a friend’s birthday dinner, we decided to stay, hoping that at least the food would save our soured opinion of the place. Sadly, they’d run out of the chicken liver dish we had enjoyed so much last time and what we settled for was a rather mediocre substitute, not to mention ineptly served by clearly overwhelmed staff.

Pizza East is still a lovely space with some very good dishes. However, the discourteous attitude and incompetent service on our last visit was a massive turnoff. If you absolutely must go, at the very least try to avoid the Saturday night shuffle. Hmpf.

Hmmm – their customer service certainy leaves a lot to be desired. When I went, we were told without irony that they’d “see if they could squeeze us in”, despite only about 3 tables in the restaurant being occupied. They neglected to tell us that half the food was unavailable, and when we asked which dishes were suitable for vegetarians were unreliably informed that Gorgonzola was sausage and Bagna Cauda had beef in it. This place seems to be relying on the reputation of Shoreditch House far more than is deserved.

    Ruth,

Tis true! They’ve got a good thing going! Best work those kinks out and start appreciating the £££ spent by their patrons! Eh?

As for the non-veg veg menu, that’s ridiculous!

How awful. Tut tut Pizza East.

Indeed. If I’m gonna throw down some real money for my grub, it would be nice to have restaurant staff at least pretend to appreciate my business.

Eight of us went last Saturday. I’d agree that front of house is chaotic, and having to mill around with a drink in the windy “bar” area is poor, but once we got a table it was all fine. It was packed and deafeningly loud, but the waitress was great while we all faffed, and the pizzas were very good indeed. A couple of people whinged about wine in tumblers, but I can live with that. I just looked, and there are four vegetarian pizzas (I had the fontina and potato),which doesn’t seem bad. And I know it’s in the same building as Shoreditch House, but I didn’t know they were connected.

    Sven,

Thanks for chiming in. I’m sorry to hear your front of house experience was chaotic but glad that you were graced with a competent waitress.

Pizza East/Shoreditch House connection: same owner, Nick Jones.

    Happy dining!
