Restaurant Review: Trail Of Our Bread

trailofourbread.jpg Whether the trend is influenced by the original New York scene, by Masterchef or Come Dine With Me, home restaurants in the capital are going from strength to strength. Londonist visited another newcomer this week:Trail Of Our Bread.

After a single trial run for friends and family, Saturday was this supper club's baptism by fire. The "Evil" menu was designed to provoke any guests who had managed to stay on the January detox wagon into a delicious calorific coma. It did a very fine job indeed.

We started with two soups served together: spicy black bean versus silky cannelli bean, scattered with bacon. Next up, enamelled pans of the richest macaroni cheese crowned with juicy cherry tomatoes - already there were surreptitious glances around the shared tables as guests determined how obviously greedy they dared to be amongst their fellow diners when serving themselves.

The third course was dill-spiked coleslaw surrounding piles of ribs smothered in a sticky smoky marinade, cloves were the secret spiky ingredient. At this point we probably should have held back on the fourth course of prime steak burgers with triple cooked chips. We didn't.

Somehow we managed dessert too, a superb treacle tart. Our host, Jim, kept a cheerful demeanour while cooking for more than a dozen people in full view of the dining room in this very covetable open apartment. After depositing a suggested donation of £20 per head in the designated vintage tins on the table (another nice touch in the carefully chosen set-dressing) we staggered off rather slowly, but very happily, in the wee hours of the morning.

Enquire about booking for their next evening by email on info@trailofourbread.com - we suspect they're going to be busy!
