Jurors ‘Confused’ By Law

law courts.jpg A new study by UCL has found that less than a third of jurors understand the law. This doesn’t seem all that surprising when you consider it – after all, law is a complex animal riddled with arcane points which even some in the profession would be hard pushed to get their heads around. The study also revealed the more basic human foible of curiosity, with an unspecified number of jurors going online to find out more about the cases they were on. The first jury-free trial was held this year which undoubtedly made things easier for the legal eagles involved; could this be the way forward?

Jurors are all told not to talk about or research their cases as anyone doing so risks the case being thrown out. One day one of those partaking in some ‘extra curricular’ will be found out, be found to be in contempt of court, which is extremely serious, and get banged up for a while, which they will probably deserve.
