Brick Lane Sculpture Not Popular With Locals

2502_arches.jpg The “hijab gates” planned for the north and south end of Brick Lane have attracted 158 letters of complaint from local residents, and not a single missive of support, according to a report by Tower Hamlets council. Blithely ignoring these sentiments, TH are pressing ahead with the scheme, part of a £2m “cultural trail” through the Spitalfields environs. The consultation period finished on Monday, and the planning application will be considered by Tower Hamlets development committee next week; if approved, the trail will be complete by the end of the year.

a couple of links I found you describing the proposal by Tower Hamlets Council. I suppose art challenges perceptions at many levels and multicultural issues are no exception to this rule and certainly they are not new in society.

‘sculpture not popular with locals’ according to who, who are these locals??? I support the local development, and about those so-called locals that wrote in and complained from other parts of London, let them know that I showed my support by voting in those councillors who proposed this plan. The councillors who put these plans forward have a mandate from the local people, its called local democracy.
