David Cameron’s Giant Face: Get Used To It

0401_cameron2.jpg The idea of a fifteen foot-high reproduction of the Tory leader’s rubicund face staring at you is nearly as terrifying as a similarly enlarged Gordon Brown attempting to smile in your general direction. Yet this is what the Conservatives think will win the election. Team Cameron and his chums today launched their election campaign, backed by a billboard poster featuring a (Photoshopped) pic of a taciturn-looking Dave, sans tie, alongside a pro-NHS statement. Guido Fawkes has already spotted one of them right next to, of all places, News International’s office in Wapping. Anybody seen other posters in the wild? There will be thousands of them across the country before long. Best get used to his boat race, we’re going to see a lot of it these next five years.

There is one on the bridge at the corner of Southwark Street and Union Street (I seem to remember). Make up and photoshop are not a good look!

There’s one just down from the Olympia at the Hammersmith Road/North End Road junction. Frankly, terrifying!

Saw one this morning (early… what a way to start the work year…) near Angel. Blurgh.

Did I dream it or was he kissing a baby on the news too?

Yes, that was him with the poor baby. The man is everywhere, those eyes boring down on us mere plebs like some demagogic overlord.

Is such a US style personality-driven campaign going to work? It has a touch of the Blair-like messianic strain, and the last party leader to try it was Charles Kennedy for the Lib Dems in 2005, to little success. Then again, Cameron is more popular than his party, so placing him front and centre might be the only real strategy they’ve got.

I saw this one this morning. It’s terrifying – his eyes follow you wherever you go…
