Remembering Operation Pied Piper

Yesterday, a special service was held at St Paul's to mark the 70th anniversary of WWII evacuation. An incredible feat of logistics saw over 3 million children, infants, mothers, pensioners and hospital patients rushed out of London in early September 1939 in response to fears of imminent bombing of the city.

Tomorrow, the West End production of Carrie's War - the classic children's story about evacuation - is offering tickets at the period price of one shilling (5p) to the first 100 punters to turn up in wartime vintage costume.

The Royal Artillery Museum hosts Second World War Evacuee Day this Saturday. Everyone affected has a story to tell and this day will focus on memories and nostalgia and include an exhibition of evacuees memorabilia as well as an exhibition about Woolwich during the Blitz.

Adding to what is already building up to be an emotional day, a very special steam train will arrive at Liverpool Street station on Saturday having recreated the evacuation journey of 669 children from Prague, orchestrated by one incredible Londoner, Sir Nicholas Winton. Read about his inspiring story in today's Independent. He'll be there to greet the Winton Train.
