Walkie Talkie Building Gets Green Light...Again

One of the more controversial additions to the City skyline has been granted planning approval. Rafael Viñoly's distinctive 'Walkie Talkie' building recently underwent a design review, which has now passed muster with City councilors. (The previous version was also approved, but subsequent design changes forced a resubmission.) The bulbous tower will stand 160m over Fenchurch Street, like a giant robotic cobra, and a publicly accessible 'sky garden' will crown the structure. That's if it ever gets built. Planning permission has been extended to five years from the customary three, leading to speculation that developers will hold off on construction until market conditions improve. It's not the first time doubts have been cast over the future of the building. In the meantime, skyscraper fans should look to the North where the Heron Tower is already 17 storeys high of an eventual 47. The Pinnacle and the Shard should also start rising soon.
