DLR: Now With Added Woolwich

On a misty, moisty, freezing morning – this morning, in other words – the new DLR extension to Woolwich Arsenal opened, creating a new way of getting across the Thames. Trains run every ten minutes, take 28 minutes to Bank and a mere six to City Airport. So, with the ferry and the foot tunnel, which is the best way to get to the other side and enjoy the delights of Woolwich?

  • Ferry: it’s free and it takes cars. But it’s cold, doesn’t run much past 8pm (if you’re lucky) and the North Woolwich terminus is a bit… isolated…
  • Foot tunnel: another one that’s free, but it does rely on shanks’s pony. There’s 100 steps at either end and the north lift is out of the order at the moment. Not as filthy or scary as we’d been led to believe.
  • DLR: not free – it’s a zone 4 station. But it’s warm, clean, bright, fast and connected to something at the other end. A clear winner!

Aaah. It almost makes me miss the DLR.

    Not quite, though.

Hopefully in a couple of weeks it’ll quieten down and it’ll be possible to bag a seat at the front and pretend you’re driving.

I do this at Lewisham all the time.

Spare a thought for the people of West Silvertown that now cannot access the DLR at peak hours due to overcrowding. Its nice to see them lauch this ahead of schedule but I am not sure proper planning has gone in place to account for the extra people.
Also London City Airport will soon be expanding its flights from 80k to 120k a year so I only hope they get them 3 carriages sooner rather than later.
