Waltham Forest council is angling to tackle child obesity through planning regulations, implementing an exclusion zone for fast food shops around schools, youth centres and parks.

It's hoped that making it more difficult for chicken shops and others of their ilk to open up in the first place will make proprietors keener to comply with health and safety and littering regulations as well as reducing opportunities for kids to nip out at lunch and gorge on chips and wings and still be back by the bell.

However, the risk is of course that longer trips to the kebab shop just mean school timetables being shucked as pupils indulge their grease habit or - in an alternative universe - an unexpected rise in the level of obese child fitness as they have to run to get lunch a full 800m round trip.

The council are consulting on the proposals until 1 December.
