Unchained Mini-Guide to Devonshire Road

Throw on your barbour jacket and jump into your 4x4, we're heading west. Way over to leafy Chiswick, in fact. Just like the rest of the country, Chiswick High Road looks pretty much like any other. But if you mosey on past the chains and head for Devonshire Road, you'll discover a little piece of Unchained paradise. The street was blessed with a bit of a make-over a couple of years ago making it prettier than the guest list at Mahiki.

First up there's Wild Swans. This place chic, chic, chic with outfits, shoes and jewellery from a mainly Scandinavian collection of designers (more Vogue than Volvo). Once you've found your outfit, complete the look by walking a few doors down to themakeupshop. This shrine to cosmetics was started by former make-up-artist-to-the-stars, Kirsty Birnstiel (she's even made Tony Blair look good) and offers professional makeovers as well as everything you need to do it yourself. And Devonshire Road isn't just for the ladies. Genco Male Grooming has a whole heap of pampering packages from hangover treatments to hot towel shaves.

But sometimes - just sometimes - it's not all about you. If you do want to spoil someone else look no further. Buy them an original piece of British art at the Frivoli Gallery. Or discover a pre-loved present at Strand Antiques. Or shimmy over to Abode for a little slice of gift heaven.

All this and we haven't even had the chance to mention Whisk - a kitchen cornucopia with gadgets a-plenty and enough whisky, stirry, grippy numbers to turn the ugliest Betty into Nigella.

One quick thing before we leave you. If you give the urban-tractor a miss and catch the tube instead, Turnham Green Terrace kind of rocks too, one of the few streets with a butcher, fishmonger and greengrocer next to eachother. Nice. If you're not up for cooking though, you might want to sample some of London's poshest pub nosh at The Devonshire, Gordon Ramsey's gastropub at number 126.
