What's The Most Londony Film Ever Made?

movielondond.jpg

The Long Good Friday. That's if you can judge these things on the index of Movie London by Tony Reeves. This updated tome from Titan Books lists the Hoskins flick 21 times, with John Wayne's Brannigan a close second on 20 entries.

The locations of over 500 films are revealed in this smart volume of filmic London - from obscure Ealing comedies to the biggest blockbusters. Do you know which bit of Kensington featured in the X-Files? That Monty Python sought the Holy Grail on Hampstead Heath? And can you name five films with scenes inside the Tate Modern? It's all here, mapped out by area of town, to help you explore. Eight colour plates tackle the bigger themes and franchises, including James Bond's London, the metropolis of Hitchcock, and the spotter's guide to spooky spots.

London, by any standard, is a location scout's happy hunting ground. We have iconic 'scrapers for the megalomaniac; boy wizards can navigate twisting alleys beneath yawning viaducts; the Darcys and Gosfords have their Syon, Kenwood and Osterley; and in some streets you can almost hear the Artful Dodger considering himself your mate. Movie London is an impressive guide to this alternative topography. Until someone builds an ap for iPhone, with movie clips triggered by geographic location, this is a must-have resource for London film buffs.

Movie London by Tony Reeves is out today, from Titan Books.
