This Week In London’s History

  • Monday21st April 1509: Henry VII dies in Richmond Palace, supposedly as the result of a ‘broken heart’ following the deaths of his son and wife several years before.
  • Tuesday22nd April 1925: George Cole is born in Tooting, and given up for adoption. He would become a successful film and television actor, arguably best known for his role as used car dealer Arthur Daley in the TV series Minder.
  • Wednesday23rd April 1979: 33-year-old teacher Blair Peach dies from head injuries following outbreaks of fighting with police at an Anti-Nazi League demonstration against a National Front meeting in Southall, West London.
  • Thursday24th April 1993: A massive IRA bomb explodes on Bishopsgate in the City of London, killing one person, injuring 44 more, and causing more than £350m damage to the area.
  • Friday25th April 2002: Two teenage brothers are acquitted of the murder of 10-year-old schoolboy Damilola Taylor, in the first of three trials for the crime over four years at the Old Bailey.

Random London Fact Of The Week
The City of London Police are, believe it or not, the current reigning Olympic champions for the Tug-of-War (representing Great Britain). The last time the sport appeared as an Olympic event was in 1920 (in Antwerp, Belgium).

London’s Weather This Week
The temperatures are going to creep up a bit this week, and we will see some sunshine. However, it will still be a bit breezy, and it’s bound to rain at some point too.
