Premiership Abroad: View From The USA

WallBall01.jpg

As the repercussions continue around the Premiership's shock announcement that it was going to take its brand of football around the world in a weekend, its chief executive Richard Scudamore is determined that the plan should survive in some way, shape or form.

As we mentioned last week, FIFA's regional associations and its president Sepp Blatter himself have come out in opposition to the idea of our league matches encroaching on their territories at all, while many here in England are convinced either that the globe is bursting with fans of our game who can't wait for us to take it to their doorsteps or that the citizens of Asia, Africa and North America know little or nothing of the Premiership juggernaut and will greet its arrival with supreme indifference.

Our colleague, Todd McClamroch, over at Chicagoist has given the matter some consideration:

Although the sport does not garner the level of support that our major three sports do, it does have a strong following, especially in major metropolitan cities. And how could we not know about the English Premier League with ESPN's love of the Beckham-cam that followed the former Manchester United star's every move in the States last summer?

You can read Todd's opinion on the likely impact of Wenger and co on the Windy City in full here.
