The Christmas turkey is cold and in sandwiches. A few of us have struggled back to work, carrying surplus chocolate to the office in a desperate attempt to stop our expanding waistlines. Which must mean it's about time to start panicking about what to do on New Year's Eve.

Aside from rammed pubs, pricey nightclubs and awkward parties in someone's frontroom, the main focus for London will be squarely on the London Eye. Since the annual drunken nonsense of Trafalgar Square was replaced by Jack Morton WorldWide's fireworks and Christophe Berthonneau's pyrotechnics on the South Bank, images of the Thames and the Eye have led global media coverage on the night - beating Sydney (and Paris) for the first time.

This year, it might be your turn to come see it in person - and expect a strong Chinese/Olympic theme as 2008 brings the Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games. The best spot will be between Blackfriars and Westminster Bridges on the banks of the Thames but the fireworks, laser display and projections will also be visible wherever you can see the Eye (and the Shell Building behind, which will have all sorts of stuff projected onto it). So if you're lucky enough to have a mate with an Eye view then force them to have a party - and make them invite you to it, even if they're as far away as Hampstead Heath. This year DJs Rob da Bank and Gilles Peterson will provide an exclusive soundtrack as the countdown approaches, so if you do decide to go down to the Thames to have a listen then our top tips must be:

1. Don't drive (like, duh!)
2. Expect to queue and allow lots of spare time to get there
3. Arrive early, as the viewing areas will close if they get full
4. Wrap up bloody well

Elsewhere, the best partying events will be Norman Jay at The Clapham Grand for a Good Times 'Live' party, cocktails at the Absolut Ice Bar or live Brazilian percussion at Guanabara. If you have yet to see the transformed Festival Hall, head there to catch some Super Furry Animals action.

Wherever you end up, public transport will run through the night and will be free between 11.45pm and 4.30am.
