Dilapidated And Charming: Stars Come Out For Wiltons

From the outside, you wouldn't guess anything was going on behind the peeling, Georgian facade at all but inside, what was once called "the handsomest room in town" was graced by equally handsome Hugh Grant and the luscious Helen Mirren as part of a fundraiser to raise awareness of the ever worsening plight of Wilton's Music Hall.

Earlier this year, Wiltons hit the headlines when it was listed in the World Monuments Fund top 100 most endangered buildings. Last night, celebs came out in support of wilting Wiltons in a glam edged attempt to raise quids towards the £3.5m needed to stablise and renovate the struggling East End icon.

The valiant venue is battling on, however, making the most of the bits that can still accommodate the public. Next week sees "A Thousand Years of Christmas" looking at the seasonal celebration from all from all sides, from medieval mysticism to hangovers. The following week, opera gets a sense of humour with "A Knife at the Opera" - a one soprano show featuring the Welsh Clouseau.

Wilton's is hanging on while its very fabric falls around its ears. This is an East End gem proving its worth as a much loved historical, cultural monument as well as a relevant arts venue and valuable community resource. Spread the word! Help save its skin.
