Gay For May

Maybe it's the heat, but May in London has become a veritable political gay-fest.

Last week, a gay man took the helm of Richmond Borough Council for the first time, and announced 'diversity' as a key theme for his year in office. This happens just as rumours intensify that popular gay copper Brian Paddick might run for London Mayor. And now, to complete the hat-trick, the leader of Westminster Council came out in some style by announcing in the Evening Standard that he is about to get hitched to his partner.

We think this is all great news. Westminster ditched its mean-spirited attempts to ban rainbow flags from Old Compton Street, which is handy if Councillor Simon Milton plans to hold post-reception drinks at one of the popular gay watering holes. His partner is currently Westminster's cabinet member for planning, which bodes well for a well-organised bash that runs like clockwork.

If Elton and David's do was classic showbiz, then Simon and Robert's will be more refined, as it's going to be at The Ritz. Guests are advised to down lots of champagne and ignore the afternoon tea, as The Ritz was pipped to the post in the latest tea 'Oscars' by the Dorchester.

24 May LGBT UPDATE: Not to be left out on all this shenanigans, today Cambridge just got its first transgender Mayor

- Councillor Jenny Bailey, who was born a man. Her transgender partner will be Mayoress. Londonist loves diversity.
